What another fantastic week we have had in Robins, from more wonderful creations in the rainforest to ‘crazy’ structures inside, we’ve had a whirlwind of a week!
Reception started the week by securing their understanding of odds and evens, we were keen and ready to go but how could Numicon help us we heard them ask! As we explored the difference between our cosy Numicon pieces where everyone had a partner and those where some were left by themselves, we soon got the hang of recognizing whether this meant they were an even or odd number and loved sorting them!
On Monday afternoon during free flow we had everything from volcano’s exploding, leading to all the people needing to escape quickly from the house “quick get out” one child shouted, to wonderful creations of drinks they enjoy at home with carefully cut pieces to replicate liquid inside and wonderful patterns work on our pegs and boards!
We then joined Year One for Jigsaw and worked really hard to think about what makes a good friend. As we took our learning outside onto the picnic blanket in the shade we came up with some wonder words “funny”, “kind”, “helpful” and many more, we were very clear what qualities we thought a good friend needed.
On Tuesday afternoon Year One thought that the heat had finally got to Mrs Brown when she revealed that they were going to make a structure using only cocktail sticks and marshmallows! But of course after a quick demonstration it was clear, we were in for an afternoon of fun and challenge but soon they were off, working in pairs to make whatever structure they wanted. They soon realized how important a strong foundation was but despite some setbacks it was fantastic to see how resilient they all were and how well they worked together…we would not let those marshmallows defeat us! We had everything from a long house with each cube representing a different room for each person to a soft play with many different layers, everyone was incredibly proud of their creations and I’m sure you’ll agree that they had absolutely every right to be!
This week, throughout the whole school it has been assessment week, the children have shown fantastic resilience and have kept going even when the learning has been tough. That said, when I showed the Year 1 the Spelling assessment there were quite a few comments…..along the lines of “ Oh yes, I love doing this” “Me too, spelling is soooo cool.” Not quite the reaction I was expecting but one that certainly made me smile! Our EYFS children have been writing sentences as part of their assessments and they have been fully focussed and determined to show off all that they could do, perfecting their finger spaces, letter formation and spelling!
Of course,it wasn’t all work work work, we managed to find time for some PYO….yes, we headed out to our fruit / herb patch to gather in our crop!
By Wednesday, it was time for something new and exciting! Drawing Club!. Myself and Mrs Langford attended some traning on Monday afternoon and were inspired and could not wait to put our training into action. Due to copywrite, we are slightly restricted in how full an explanation we can give, however we can say…..ask your children. We read the story - Not Now Bernard and then we had a go at creating our own books. The vocabulary, the enthusiasm, the excitement and the engagement were through the roof - so much so we spent the whole of Wednesday afternoon in Drawing Club - these photos simply don’t do it justice.
And finally….Forest School Friday - my favourite session of the week and always a great way to head into the weekend. This week, we used the dragon sneezes to light our fire, toasted some sliced apples that had been dipped in a little bit of brown sugar and then washed the apples down with elderfower juice - delicious!
