What a week of exciting experiences we have had from taking on new challenges in gymnastics to travelling back in time to 1666!
On Monday our week started with a tuck and roll, warming up to the crazy frog certainly woke us all up and the fun certainly didn’t stop there. We then learnt how to incorporate a bench into a gymnastic routine, firstly balancing along the bench and then learning how to tuck our head down and onto the mat whilst kneeling on the bench and then performing a forward roll! It was fun, it was challenging but we certainly showed resilience and gave it a fantastic go, which resulted in beaming smiles and lots of giggles!
In the afternoon Reception became scientists and used nothing but their noses to become super sniffers! We had hidden different smells in cups for them to sniff and then predict what they thought the smell might be, but they were also asked to think about how the smell made them feel. It was wonderful to see how engaged all of the children were, with super sniffers on the go we had amazing predictions such as flowers for mint and cake for chocolate, with children saying that the smell of chocolate made them feel happy but generally the smell of things such as lemon and vinegar made them draw straight face emoji, we can’t really blame them!
As we continued through the week, we joined Brightwalton School and travelled back in time to London in 1666, fires were raging through the streets and we went on a journey meeting many of the famous people who lived during the time of the Great Fire of London. From Samuel Pepys to King Charlies II, they immersed us in the experience of what life would have been like living through the four days as the fire tore through the buildings of London and how people escaped the fire.
Before we left to get on a boat to escape the fire some of us worked in a relay race to help put out the burning fire! The sound of Cotton Eye Joe in the back ground really helped to take us back to 1666.
We joined in singing ‘London’s Burning’ and even had a go at singing a sea shanty to make the journey down the River Thames that bit more realistic!
When we returned to London, it was clear many buildings had been burnt down so we helped to rebuild by drawing out what we would have wanted London to have looked like, our plans were very impressive!
All of the children’s behaviour who took part in this trip was exemplary and we were so proud of them. We all had such an amazing morning and know that this experience really brought the Great Fire of London to life!
Then on Wednesday, there were lots of people wandering around the school looking rather…….Egyptian! Yes, Owls have been learning all about Ancient Egypt and in order to bring their learning to life they immersed themselves into their topic by wearing full costume and jewellery. They looked amazing! Of course, Robins were so excited and curious that we just had to invite the Owls in to tell us all about their learning - thank you Owls / Egyptians, we had great fun meeting you all.
This week has been Science week, so on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we joined Kingfishers for our Science sessions. We have been investigating what Red Kites need in their habitats - water, shelter, food and a suitable climate - exactly what we have here in Great Shefford! We even managed to make a 3D model of a Red Kite! The children all worked collaboratively and discussed their presentations and were ready to perform in worship on Thursday, thank you to all the parents that attended.
Before we knew it, it was Friday - Topsy Turvy day - the children were all so excited, again, thank you everyone for supporting this fundraising day. Take a look at us all in the pictures below.
And we finished off the week in the usual way - Forest School Friday…..where we seemed to have opened up a mud salon where you can just turn up and get your nails decorated…..with mud!!!! We made mud bricks, mud faces on trees and just literally got stuck in using our hands!!!!
