3... 2... 1... Blast Off!

Wow, what an end to the term!

In English, we learnt all about descriptive language and how to write a setting description. Using a picture of the night sky, we wrote a description of the setting.

Have a look at some of our setting descriptions below:

In Science, we launched and investigated the best material for a straw rocket.

Here’s some pictures from our investigation:

In Art, we completed our finally version of our Starry Night pictures. Everyone observed the original so carefully and tried to include many of the same features in their own version. Below are some of the wonderful works of art.

The curriculum maps and KIRFs for Term 2 are on the Kingfishers class page.

Have a lovely half term.

Lots of changes!

In English, we finished and published our amazing stories and they’ll be coming home next week for everyone at home to read.

In Science, we completed creating our straw rockets ready to launch on Monday.

In Maths this week, Mrs Oberholzer’s group discovered that counting in 2s can be both even and odd numbers but are still practicing counting in 3s because it is a bit tricky.

This week we started creating our own version of the Starry Night painting. We looked very carefully at details on Van Gogh’s painting and tried our best to include similar details in our versions. Watch this space for the final pieces next week.

In Topic this week, we continued learning about people for Black History month. We learnt all about Martin Luther King jr and his dream. We then wrote some of our own dreams.

Forest School as always is great fun. This week some of the year 2’s had fun building dens. They were very careful to make sure the wood was placed in a way that it would not fall and hurt someone. Others were being very inventive pretending to have camp fires or making up there own games while others climbed a ladder to get into the tree (as long as there is an adult was right there).

After the Harvest worship on Wednesday, Mrs Liddiard cooked some of the vegetables we had grown in the raised beds at school and brought them in for us to try.

What a Starry Night!

In English, we’ve had lots of fun planning and starting to write our new Stories called How to catch a... Check back next week to see our incredible narratives.

In Topic, for Black History Month we discussed and explored the amazing life changing work of Katherine Johnson. She was an incredible mathematician who planned routes into space and was highly regarded by the astronauts.

In Art, we discussed how we could improve our previous work and tried again to re-create Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

Year 1 Forest School:

Today we managed to capture the Year 1’s having fun and exploring the forest school area.

Have a look below:

A twist in the story

Our learning has WOWED Miss Rignall, Mrs Oberholzer and Mrs Dale this week.

In English, we wrote an alternative ending to the story How to catch a star.

There were lots of incredible stories, here are some examples below:

In Maths, we have been focusing on Place Value for the last few weeks.

Miss Rignall’s math group have been exploring which numbers are more than, less than or equal to another number.

We are practising to give reasons for our answers using a given sentence stem such as:

I know that… because…

If… then…

Have a look below to see if Miss Rignall’s group have convinced you that they are right!

Mrs Oberholzer’s group have been using part-whole models and place value charts to represent numbers to 100 as well as learning how to explain our answers using sentence stems such as I know because….. or I agree because…

Have a look below to see their learning.

Mrs Oberholzer’s group were challenged to explain if the statement below is true or false.

What do you think?

In RE, we have been looking at the story The Lost Sheep and discussing how we are special.

This week we retold the story using a storyboard.

A different ending...

This week we have been expanding our knowledge of our topic, Starry Night.

In English we have been continuing our learning journey to rewrite the resolution and ending of How to Catch a Star.

We started off by mind mapping our incredible ideas.

We then started to plan our different ending to the story.

In Topic, this week we learnt the names of some of Vincent van Gogh's paintings. We discussed why we preferred some but not others. Ask the children if they can remember the names of some paintings?

We also learnt about how we find out about the past - reading stories, looking at photographs or pictures, searching on the internet and studying artefacts often found in museums. We were fascinated to learn that there was an archaeological dig not far from school in Boxford, where they found a mosaic floor.

Art was a wonderfully messy affair. We were trying to create different effects using paint but did not use a brush. We used a clothes peg and used different items (cotton wool, pipe cleaner and foil) as a brush to see what different effect we could create. Some were more successful than others but we all had fun using paint and seeing if we could create a background for our own version of Starry Night.

In Science, we investigated the best material to hold water.

Our second full week back

We have had another busy week in Kingfishers class learning lots of new things.

In English, we have been learning all about how to form and punctuate sentences. We used our class story to help us to come up with lots of thoughts for some amazing sentences.

Here are some of us practising how to form and punctuate sentences:

In science, we went on an objects hunt. We looked at different objects in the school grounds and discussed the suitability of the material used. I wonder why wood is used for a bench, is there a better material we could use?

Here is some of our art work from this week. Can you remember which artist we are learning about?

In French, we started to learn about the inventor of the hot air balloon. Can you remember the name of the story we read?

We managed to capture some of our forest school activities this week. Here are some of the photos:

How to catch a...

Ask your children, what is our new class book?

It’s been a busy first full week back and we have done lots of learning to start our term topic of Starry Night.

We started off the week exploring our science (Everyday Materials) and learnt the difference between an object and a material. Miss Rignall challenged the children to explain why a table made out of wood is better than a table made out of jelly. We decided wood is better, but what do you think?

We had lots of opportunities to use our cool area (even though it wasn’t very cool!) and Choose Our Own Learning.

In history, we remembered key individuals and events that we had previously learnt about. We used this information to create a timeline.

In Art, we learnt who painted Starry Night. We placed a mini frame over our own copy of the painting and carefully tried to recreate the part inside the mini frame.

Our First Two Days Back!

Welcome back to school everyone!

What a busy first two days we’ve had in Kingfishers class. We have enjoyed seeing our friends after the summer holidays and welcoming all the new children into Kingfishers class.

Over the the past two days, we have been learning our new routines, getting to know the new layout of our classroom as well as finding out about all the new things we are going to learn this term.

We discussed and created recipes for how to be a good person. Here are some of our recipes:

We created a booklet about what we did in the summer holidays. Here are some of our colourful booklets:

We explored our outside area and completed a variety of space themed challenges.
