After a truly royal end to our week last week and royal festivities over the bank holiday weekend, we came in full of excitement at sharing all the wonderful things that Robin’s had done. From watching the coronation on Saturday to the colour run on Sunday, they have certainly made some very special memories.
Reception started the week exploring the concept of the ‘5 and a bit’ structure to explore the composition of numbers 6 to 9, let’s look at the number 7…….
Outside in our rainforest area, Robin’s loved developing their scissor skills and were busy designing their own gingerbread man! From dresses to shorts, bows to hats, we had some very fancy ones indeed!
On Tuesday afternoon, Year one continued to explore Alebrijis (Imaginary animals) and were busy designing their very own. The children thought carefully about what their favourite animals around, selecting 2 or 3 to then merge and create their very own imaginary animal. From cat’s heads to bodies with fish scales, the body of a snake with the head of a monkey, we had some very wild and wonderful ideas!
In the afternoon, Reception were also busy continuing to explore incidental art, using straws to blow paint around the page! The children loved watching what happened as they blew harder or softer and everyone managed to avoid sucking the straws instead of blowing!
At the end of the day on Tuesday we were treated to a very special performance from Danielle and Year One who had been busy practising a lullaby to help Danielle’s cuddly toy in Pantomimus. As the children sang along to the guitar, they performed actions to the song, it was made even more special as they had written the lullaby themselves…what a wonderful way to end the day!
In Science, Year 1 have been learning all about habitats and organisms as part of their learning about Living Things and their habitats. Can they tell you about Mrs Gren (or Mrs Nerg as it is explained below), here is a helpful video tip - just incase they need a little help. They were also sorting out which organisms lived in which habitat!
Also on Wednesday Year 1 became robots in their computer lesson and had to give instructions to their partner and their partner had to follow the commands - I could hear lots of ‘robot talk’ which made me smile…..two forward, turn right, three forward, turn right again! Ms Reynolds demonstrated on the board how to write their commands in rows so that the commands were organised and easy to read.
Then in Maths this week, the Year 1s were introduced to arrays where they had to add equal groups, either in columns or rows. Oscar had a lightbulb moment “hang on, we did rows in computers too, we had to write our instructions down in rows remember.” It is moments like this, when connections in learning are made across all the subject areas and suddenly it all makes sense, that make our daily teaching so worthwhile.
Thank you to all of you who have been supporting the learning of The Magic Porridge Pot at home (Year 1). Can you believe that the children have learnt the whole story already. On Friday, the day finally arrived where they were ready to start writing the story. Ms Reynolds explained that they would only be writing the first part of the story today - this was met with quite a few moans and groans “oh, I wanted to write the whole story….can’t we just spend the rest of the day doing our writing.” What a pleasure to hear such moans!!!!! The Year 1s certainly have developed a love of writing.
Our Reception children have also developed a love of writing, they have been demonstrating their fantastic letter formation whilst learning how to read and write their common exception words.
…….and to finish of the week……we had our favourite - Forest School Friday!!!!! We were smelling and tasting (mint) different leaves, building bridges, leaf printing, mud printing and so much more…..click on the photos below.
Whilst on the subject of Forest School - next week our Forest School session will be on Wednesday afternoon - please send in Forest School clothing on Wednesday not Friday.
Have a wonderful weekend and see you all on Monday (haven’t said that for the last few weeks!)
