Term 2
Week 1
Welcome back everyone, we hope you had a lovely half term break.
We have had another week filled to the brim with exciting new learning.
We started the week off discussing All Saint’s Day – we talked about Saint David, Saint George, Saint Patrick, Saint Andrew, Saint Christopher, Saint Valentine and Saint Anthony – patron saint of lost things – I find myself thinking about Saint Anthony a lot!!!
As well as our daily Maths and Phonics sessions we have been celebrating Guy Fawkes and bonfire night, the children have been learning all about this significant, British, historical event and were fascinated by the virtual fireworks display we watched on the whiteboard. We had lots of ooohhhhhs and aaarrrrrs. We then created our own firework pictures against the backdrop of the Houses of Parliament using pastels, chalks and crayons, experimenting with different marks such as dots, lines, zig zags and swirls, carefully selecting the colour and medium.
Also, this week we headed up to our Chaddleworth School for our Wednesday Welly Walk. We learnt that our school site is called Chaddleworth St. Andrew’s, “we have learnt about him this week” called someone – yes fantastic! As we walked around Chaddleworth village we came to some steps, not that many and not particularly steep however I heard “this feels like climbing up Big Ben”, I did smile. We stopped briefly at the memorial statue, “where are all the poppies then?” asked someone, “ah, they are not here yet, they will be here after Remembrance Sunday, perhaps we will come back to see them then” (which we will). “Look Mrs Higgins, there is a S on that lorry, we have been learning that sound”, yes we have! I absolutely love it when I hear the children having experienced new learning and vocabulary, applying it in all areas of their learning.
Show and Tell on a Thursday continues to be very popular and we enjoy sharing and celebrating the photos and videos that we receive from home. We don’t have a rota or turn taking so please bring in items or just drop us an email or upload through Teams any photos or videos so we can share with the class, it can be anything that interests your child, from cooking, to pet snakes, new bedrooms to certificates – it really is whatever is important to your child as it is important to us too!
We have started to think about Remembrance day ahead of next week’s learning and you may wish to watch this beautiful and evocative animation with your child at home. We have watched it together in class and have been in awe of the children’s understanding and empathy. Please do share with us any thought provoking discussions that you have as a result of sharing this with your child so that we can include the points raised in our learning next week. Getting involved in your child’s learning, even in a simple way, will help your child develop a positive attitude towards learning.
Have a relaxing weekend, enjoy bonfire night, stay safe and just before I sign off, I just want to say how lovely it was to see so many of you at the village hall Saturday afternoon – the cake was DELICIOUS.
